A Skill Assessment is a crucial step for skilled workers seeking to migrate to Australia under the General Skilled Migration (GSM) program. It is required to verify that your qualifications and work experience meet the standards set by Australian authorities for your nominated occupation.
The assessment is conducted by designated assessing authorities recognized by the Australian Government. These authorities evaluate your skills, qualifications, and work experience to determine whether they are suitable for your chosen occupation. A positive skills assessment is necessary to proceed with visa applications such as the Skilled Independent Visa (subclass 189), Skilled Nominated Visa (subclass 190), and others.
You must choose an occupation that is on Australia's Skilled Occupation List (SOL). Your occupation needs to be aligned with your qualifications and experience.
You need to provide evidence of your qualifications, such as degrees, diplomas, or certificates relevant to your occupation.
You must demonstrate the required work experience in the nominated occupation. Typically, a minimum number of years of relevant work experience is required for a positive skills assessment.
For majority of the skill assesments, a certain level of English proficiency is required. This can be demonstrated through recognized language tests like IELTS, TOEFL, or PTE.
Research the Right Authority: Different occupations require assessments by different authorities. You will need to find the designated authority for your nominated occupation. For example, engineers may need to be assessed by Engineers Australia, while accountants are assessed by CPA Australia, CA ANZ, or IPA.
Consult the Skilled Occupation List (SOL): The occupation you choose must be listed on the Australian Government's Skilled Occupation List (SOL) or the Consolidated Sponsored Occupation List (CSOL). This list includes occupations that are eligible for skilled migration to Australia.
Proof of Qualifications: Gather all necessary educational certificates, transcripts, and other qualification documents that demonstrate your eligibility for the occupation.
Work Experience Documents: Submit proof of your relevant work experience, including reference letters from previous employers, contracts, payslips, or business records.
English Language Proficiency: Provide evidence of your English language proficiency through an approved English test (e.g., IELTS, TOEFL, or PTE).
Identification Documents: You will likely need to provide your passport, birth certificate, and any other identity verification documents.
Resume/Curriculum Vitae (CV): Include an updated CV that outlines your work history, qualifications, and professional accomplishments.
Fill Out the Online Application: Most assessing authorities offer an online portal where you can submit your application. Fill in the necessary forms accurately, ensuring all details match the supporting documents you provide.
Provide Occupation-Specific Information: Some authorities may require additional information or documentation specific to your occupation (such as professional membership or licenses).
Payment: Most assessing authorities require a non-refundable fee to process your skill assessment application. Ensure that you have the necessary funds and make the payment according to the authority’s instructions.
Submit via the Designated Portal: After completing the online application and uploading all required documents, submit the application through the designated platform.
Check for Confirmation: Upon submission, you should receive a confirmation receipt and any reference numbers related to your application.
Assessment Process: The assessing authority will review your application, including your qualifications, work experience, and supporting documents.
Skill Assessment Outcome: After assessment, you will receive an outcome notification. If your application is successful, you will receive a positive skill assessment, which is required for applying for skilled visas.
