Essential Requirements for the Temporary Graduate Visa (Subclass 485):

  • You must be under 35 years of age.

  • You must hold an eligible visa, typically a student visa, or have held one in the last 6 months.

  • You must provide evidence of English proficiency (e.g., IELTS, TOEFL, PTE Academic).

  • You must have completed a CRICOS-registered course in Australia. For at least 2 academic years (92 weeks),

  • You must have adequate health insurance (e.g., Overseas Visitor Health Cover – OVHC).

  • You must meet Australia’s health and character requirements (includes police checks and possibly medical exams).

In most cases, the 485 Graduate Visa cannot be extended once it has been granted. However, depending on your qualification, location of study, and when you applied, you may be eligible for an additional two-year extension (for certain bachelor’s, master’s, and PhD degrees on the eligible qualification list). If your 485 visa is nearing expiry, our migration experts can help you explore pathways to a new visa or permanent residency, based on your occupation and career goals.

The duration of your stay depends on your visa stream and qualification: Graduate Work Stream: Up to 18 months Post-Study Work Stream: Bachelor’s degree – 2 to 4 years Master’s degree – 3 to 5 years Doctorate – 4 to 6 years Second Post-Higher Education Work Stream: Available for graduates who studied and continue living in regional areas.

While the 485 visa itself is temporary, it can serve as an important stepping stone to Permanent Residency (PR). It gives you time to gain skilled work experience, which can improve your eligibility for permanent visas such as: Skilled Independent (Subclass 189) Skilled Nominated (Subclass 190) Employer-Sponsored (Subclass 186) Regional Skilled (Subclass 491 → 191)

Unfortunately, you generally cannot apply for a 485 visa if your student visa has already expired and you are not on a valid bridging visa. The Department of Home Affairs requires that you: Hold (or have held) an eligible student visa within the last six months, and Lodge your application before your current visa expires.
